ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

OUR MISSION

In the tradition of our Founder – Blessed Frederic Ozanam, our Patron Saint Vincent de Paul, and inspired by Gospel values, the St Vincent de Paul Society enables conference members to grow in their spiritual life through providing person-to-person practical service to people experiencing social isolation and economic disadvantage.

WHO WE ARE

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul began in Paris in 1833. Frederic Ozanam, who became its Founder, used to lead a group of Catholic University students in debates on religion. Frederic was able to provide historical evidence that Christianity had always fostered human progress, yet his opponents kept challenging him on the Church’s role at that time and on his own personal involvement

One day, Frederic took up the challenge and decided to do what Jesus did, by reaching out to the poor. In due course his Society was established under the patronage of St. Vincent de Paul and was able to attract 100 members in less than two years.

For over 150 years, home visitation has been the core work of the Society. Members of the Society are people who live out their faith in action by visiting people in their homes to provide support, friendship and material assistance. This practice of home visitation is carried out by all local St. Vincent de Paul Society Conferences, like ours. By visiting people in their homes, the Society aims to help men, women and families break out of their cycle of poverty and disadvantage.

Internationally, the Society operates in 148 countries and has over 950,000 members.

WHAT WE DO

Our St. Vincent de Paul Narre Warren Conference operates through our parish, and consists of a small but dedicated group of volunteers committed to the mission of helping the poor and the marginalized within our wider community. Together with the Society’s 40,000 members and volunteers in Australia, our group works hard to assist people in need and combat social injustice across our great land.

Our Narre Warren Conference conducts home visits in pairs, daily throughout the week, and at times on week-ends.

Monthly, we meet twice as a group to provide an opportunity for members to come together in mutual support and encouragement.
