The Catechism Program at OLHC began in 2007 – an initiative of Sr. Doreen Dagge and a group of dedicated volunteers. The program is about nurturing and encouraging the faith of the children of the parish, providing them with the opportunities to grow in their knowledge and love of God as they embrace the deep truths of the Scriptures.

The program is designed to enhance spiritual learning and growth through active participation in various liturgical celebrations and events. Catechism students enact the Way of the Cross and the Nativity Story every year, which establishes a wider connection with the parish community.

THE TEAM

A dedicated team of volunteers facilitate the running of the Catechist Program at OLHC. They are members of our parish who have a keen interest in the faith development of the children in the parish.

They don’t require special teaching experience as they can gain practical experience by working with, watching, and listening to existing catechists. They receive formal instruction through training material approved by the Diocese.Catechists are required to attend a parish-funded structured programme, after which they receive a certificate of their training.

New members are encouraged to join, which keeps the team fresh with new ideas, and ensures that the Catechist Program is sustainable in the parish. Catechist volunteers are expected to attend regular planning meetings to ensure the effective running of this program.

Catechism Program visited Calvary St Jude's Residential Aged Care facility

The students from the OHLC Catechism Program visited Calvary St Jude's Residential Aged Care facility on 14th September 2024. The visit was a heartwarming event that brought joy to both the young and the elderly. The children showcased their talents by performing two uplifting action songs. The children in Grades 3 and 4 also performed a skit on embodying the virtues of our Mother Mary, such as love, humility, and compassion, allowing the residents to reflect on the profound impact of Mother Mary in their own lives. As the children interacted with the older residents, they engaged in meaningful conversations, sharing stories and laughter that bridged generations. This connection not only brightened the day for the elderly but also instilled in the children a sense of community and respect for their elders. We heard that the kids were full of questions about growing older on the car rides home! The visit emphasised the importance of nurturing relationships across age groups, fostering a spirit of kindness and understanding. Overall, this experience was a beautiful reminder of how the values taught during Catechism lessons can be lived out through simple acts of love and service.
